Career Counsellor
The Career Counselor reports directly to the Operations Manager and Executive
Director. They evaluate client’s psychological functioning and personal
resources within the context of career management; use psychometrics as
required to assess interests, skills, personality and intellectual, cognitive
and affective functions; analyze results; intervene for the purpose of
clarifying the person’s identity in order to develop their ability to make
career choices and meet career objectives.
A Career Counsellor utilizes specialized counseling techniques, combined with tools and
resources, to provide career guidance that supports clients facing difficult situations, in
making complex decisions. The focus of Career Counseling is career exploration, career
change, personal career development and other career related issues
Employment Requirements:
- Master’s Degree in a Related field (e.g. Counselling, Social Work, Education, or Psychology) with experience in career development.
• Certification with appropriate
professional counseling associations.
• Specialized counseling competencies.
• 3-5 year’s experience working in a
Career Counseling related environment.
• Criminal Record Check.
• Child Abuse Registry Check.
• Ability to work with people from
diverse cultures.

Additional Information:
Progression to supervisory positions is possible through experience.
Research and work with management to stay current with resources, skills,
and technology. Such as LaMPSS and the core competencies for career
counsellors.
Attain Career Practitioner Certification within 2 years and/or evidence of
certification, enrollment in the program or presence on a waiting list with
the Nova Scotia Career Development Association.
Must have Reliable vehicle and willing to travel.
Skills Requirements:
Certification with professional counseling associations; specialized
counseling competencies.
Incorporate therapeutic awareness and skills in client relationships.
Ability to administer and interpret psychometric assessments.
Good knowledge of community organizations, service providers, and referral
agencies.
Ability to access and effectivelyuse information and communications
technology; conduct research.
Solid understanding of Labor Market Research.
Working knowledge of career development theories and applications.
Ability to define and manage career and personal development goals and
transition.
Adherence to inclusionary practice, ethical decision making and respect for
diversity.
Solid understanding of assessment processes, tools and resources.
Working knowledge of employment/career related services, programs and
interventions.
Commitment to professional development and career self-management.
Disability Management Understanding and Knowledge Integrating sound
analysis when considering the clients emotional and physical needs as they
relate to their disability and the potential impact on the client’s return to
work action plan.
Have MEd (Counseling) Degree.
Demonstrated knowledge of the labor market trends and for industry
sectors in Nova Scotia.
Knowledge of theoretical principles of adult education and psychology.
Demonstrated expertise in the area of career counseling.
Understanding of social, community and economic issues facing clients
(empathy) when working with community partners and employers.
Organizational Skills in supervising, coordinating, directing, coaching, and
negotiating.
Conceptual Skills – analysis, interpretation, policy development, product
design.
Conduct initial intake duties including gathering and documenting relevant
client information.
Evaluate an individual’s psychological functioning and personal resources
through appropriate assessment.
Use psychometric assessment as requires assessing interests, skills,
personality, and intellectual cognitive and affective functions.
Analyze results of assessments.
Assist clients in making career decisions and meeting career objectives.
Implement an intense comprehensive process of Career Counseling using
recognized formal and informal assessments.
Adapt the process as required to meet the needs of various clients,
depending on their disability/needs.
Provide Career Counseling –Maintenance Services to clients who require
additional defined support to hold to his/her chosen career path.
As required, facilitate the 10-week Prior Leaning Assessment Program.
Order and maintain a stock of assessments and completed assessments in a
manner in compliance with the Standards of Practice for Counselors as
determined by the Canadian Counseling and Psychotherapy Association
(CCPA).
The Career Counselor will train in other Formal Assessments as required by
the Organization.
At all times ensure that every effort is made to meet and exceed client
needs with empathy and professionalism.
Always maintain client and employee confidentiality.
Take leadership in the development of Career Counseling expertise in other
staff who are tasked with career development.
Consult with Case Managers about recommendations for referrals to outside
agencies.
Complete accurate and on-going file notes and reports in LaMPSS.
Complete monthly reports to Operations Manager/Executive Director.
Prepare Career Counseling Reports for clients, except in exceptional cases
when such a long report would not be necessary or beneficial.
This is a 28hrs/week, permanent
position. Compensation includes a
competitive salary plus benefits
package.
